I am a retired optometrist and self taught artist/ illustrator based in Pickering, North Yorkshire. I generally work in watercolours or mixed media (occasionally highly textured). I am currently enjoying experimenting with acrylics and also ink with watercolour. Much of my artwork is inspired by the towns, villages and wildlife of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast.
I was born in Wakefield and spent more than 20 years in the South Lakes area. I am a member of Kendal Art Society, Whitby Art Society and Vale of Pickering Art Club and have exhibited locally and also in West Yorkshire.
I often work from photographs, so if there's a special one you'd like a painting of, please get in touch.
After a long and successful career in education and sport, Colin became a full time artist in 2006 and now works from his studio in Lockton, in the idyllic surroundings of the North York Moors National Park. He is well travelled, keeping journals, sketches and photographic records from across Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America, Mexico, Nepal, China, India, Australia, New Zealand and the Antarctic.
Colin is experimental in his work and uses oils, pastels, watercolours, inks and mixed media to interpret his view of the world. He is not constrained by one type of subject matter or technique and will tackle anything that inspires him and fires him with enthusiasm.
Following Grammar School in the Midlands I went into architecture as a trainee. Progressed in building design for over 20 years before forming my own company insulating externally all types of buildings. Sold the company in 2000 and moved to North Yorkshire to retire. Always had a desire to paint so joined an art group in Helmsley under Bill Campbell-Trotter. Became immersed in painting with both water-colour and acrylics subsequently becoming involved with exhibitions throughout the Ryedale Area. Chris sells originals and prints in Watercolour, Acrylic and Oil.
I work mainly in acrylics and mixed media to produce interpretations of various themes. My work tends to evolve in categories, for example the music series, sea and landscapes - all are interpretations in which I hope to create atmosphere, colourful observations and imaginative interpretations. I also paint the very popular quirky paintings from outdoor painting sessions. I exhibit widely and private commissions are held in the USA, Spain, Australia and Canada as well as collections in the U.K.
I now have a range of over 50 greetings cards, which have been printed from my quirky paintings - these are always available from my studio.
I attended Leeds College of Art for four years and received my National Diploma in Design (NDD). I qualified in Graphic Design and have worked in Advertising and Print Design ever since.
I went self-employed in 1975 and have always worked from home, apart from a few years, when I had a
studio and office in the centre of York.
Although Pets are my main choice to paint, I have digressed into wildlife which I also enjoy. I am currently in residence in a Penthouse flat in Kirkbymoorside with my wife Dorothy. A beautiful town in North Yorkshire, ideally centered between the coast, the moors and the city of York.
Penny lives in a small idyllic village with her husband on the edge of the North York Moors where they acquired four self catering holiday cottages. Living in these beautiful surroundings inspired Penny to get out and paint from nature. Over the last 16 years she has built up a vast portfolio using watercolours, pastels, pen and ink, felting, collage, batik and more. She has also executed many commissions over the years some of which have raised considerable sums of money for charity. She exhibits widely and attends workshop events several times a year.
