Newsletter November 2023

Dear VOPAC member

Welcome to your November news!

in October we resumed our monthly demonstrations following the September exhibition. Dave Jeffery gave a fascinating demonstration of landscape painting using watercolour overlaid with acrylic. We hope that those who attended found it stimulating and welcome your views.

Our next demonstration, on 9th November in the Whistler room, Pickering Memorial Hall will be led by well known, local artist Sue Slack. Her vivid landscapes will be recognised by many of you; see https://sueslack.co.uk/

Sue will demonstrate how to paint acrylic landscapes from sketches and photographs including her approach to using colour and the benefits of drawing upside down. We are very fortunate to have engaged Sue for this demonstration and it promises to be a great evening.

Do you remember our interactive ceramics session in July? The items created during that evening have now been fired and can be claimed on the 9th November.

The next monthly practical meeting will be on 15th November in the Memorial Hall, and the topic will be the colours purple and yellow. As always members can work on their own projects if they wish.

Time is quickly passing so I also want to give you all advanced notice of the final meeting of the year on December 7th at the Memorial Hall. Our Annual General Meeting will be followed by a talk on the history of watercolour art Paul Blackwell. It will conclude with some Christmas cheer so do put the date in your diary.

Jacksons have just released a new blog post on the impact of acrylic paints upon the environment. The post concludes that it has a minor impact but we can reduce this further by filtering the acrylic solids out of waste water; see https://www.jacksonsart.com/blog/2023/09/28/acrylic-painting-rinse-water-microplastics/

Looking forward to seeing both old and new members and visitors at our forthcoming events.
