Newsletter June 2024

In News, Newsletters by Sue Broughton

It is hardly believable that we are almost half way through 2024!. We have had a succession of very successful and well attended demonstrations this year. The May demonstration by Belinda Hazlerigg inspired us all once more to get out our acrylic paints and get creative.

We are now looking forward to our next demonstration on 13th June, 7pm at the Memorial Hall, Pickering. Our artist for June will be Peter Woolley who will be demonstrating a dramatic mountain landscape in line and wash. This is certain to be of interest to many members. Peter is a very well-known artist– many of you will be aware of his work. He is an experienced teacher as well as artist so we are very fortunate to have hired him for a demonstration and can look forward to a great evening. For more details about Peter, visit his website at https://www.peterwoolley.co.uk/

We have two outdoor painting days scheduled in June. On June 6th our painting day will be at Levisham station and on 24th June we will return to Pickering. As always meet-up is at 10am. Attendance at the outdoor painting days so far this year has been a little disappointing, possibly due to the poor weather. Just to remind everyone that experienced outdoor painters are ready to share their knowledge and expertise so do feel that you can give it a go even if it is new to you; it is a very enjoyable day out.

The next practical evening will be on Wednesday 19th June in the Memorial Hall; the subject will art materials, but as always you can bring your own project to pursue instead.

9We have just one place left on our next day workshop on 6th July. Phil Reynolds will be teaching life drawing with the aid of a life model. This is a great opportunity; contact Gail on 07540671442 or email the club if you are interested. Those who have already signed up need to pay in full by 22nd June please. Either make a bank transfer (BACS) payment to “Vale of Pickering Art Club, HSBC 40 31 08, Account no. 01545752” (please put your name in the reference field). Or pay by cheque; please make payable to ‘Vale of Pickering Art Club’ and post to Sue Broughton, 17 Greenlands Road, Pickering, YO18 8BQ, or pay in cash at the next demonstration on 11th June.

The more observant of you will have noticed that our July demonstration is the same day as the General Election. We hope to go ahead in a different room to usual in the Memorial Hall and will keep you informed,

The Vale of Pickering is within a vibrant arts community. This is exemplified through Open Studios in North Yorkshire which is one of the biggest in the UK. This year Open Studios will take place during the first two weekends of June: 1-2 and 8-9 June, 2024, from 10am to 5pm.

You can find out more at  https://nyos.org.uk/

Many artists across the region offer sessions and courses and Open Studios is a good way of finding out more.

Here are just three examples of what is on offer.

Well-known local artist Open Studios participant Ione Harrison is offering watercolour workshops during June which are bound to be popular. Visit Ione’s website at www.ioneharrison.co.uk for more details

One of our club members Sarah Green offers regular evening fun art sessions at Pickering Memorial Hall which are open to anyone including those with no experience. On 30th May participants will be painting a rooster and on June 27th a highland cow. Contact Sarah on 07973334995 for more details.

IN Malton, Sue Mann offers relaxed and social drawing sessions, again for all abilities. For more details email Sue Mann at hello@suejmann.com.

This summer promises to be a busy one for all artists, so enjoy!
